Homeschooling in visual arts

The teaching of visual arts focuses on developing children's ability to create, analyze and experience works of art.

Subject purpose and curriculum

We have taken as our starting point the state's, and including the Ministry of Education's, objectives and guiding guidelines and learning objectives for basic educational content, so that we ensure that mandatory and important learning is the framework for the teaching and is appropriate for the age level. The curriculum has been updated to 2024 and is thus ensured of the latest knowledge and methods. We have also compiled the curriculum overview for you, so that you can keep up with what you should be able to do. We refer to the description of the subject's objectives and the full curriculum overview here:

Techniques and imagery

Children learn to work with different techniques, materials and styles while building an understanding of art history and the art forms of different cultures. They develop their ability to reflect on art and use imagery in communicative and creative contexts.

The teaching emphasizes developing both practical skills and a deeper understanding of the significance of art in a historical and cultural context.

Review of visual arts

We combine technical instruction with creative tasks that engage the children in both classical and modern art. The instruction covers:

  • Drawing techniques and sculpture: Children learn basic and advanced drawing techniques, from perspective and proportions to shadow, light and detail drawing. We also work with sculpture, both classic modeling and modern composition techniques such as papier-mâché and wire.

  • Colors and painting techniques: The lessons cover understanding the color wheel, color saturation and contrasts, as well as experimental techniques such as mixed media and impasto. Children learn to work with both classical and abstract painting and to develop their own expression.

  • Art History and Analysis: We introduce children to major art periods such as the Renaissance, Impressionism, and Surrealism, as well as more recent movements such as Cubism and Minimalism. They learn to analyze and criticize works of art through an understanding of composition, symbolism, and style.

  • Digital Art and Graphic Design: Children receive a basic introduction to digital art production and graphic design. They learn to work with digital drawing and editing tools as well as animation and visual communication.

  • Architecture and Space: Focusing on basic architectural drawing, spatial compositions, and building simple models. Children will also learn about public art and its role in society.

  • Art from different cultures: We explore artistic expressions from around the world, such as Japanese sumi-e, North American Native art, and Arabic calligraphy, contributing to a global understanding of the role of art in cultures.
