School refusal – get help to support your child
All children deserve to feel the joy of school. But the joy of school can disappear.
It is a cause for great concern when your child does not thrive and loses the desire to go to school. School refusal is a growing problem, and absence has major consequences for children both academically and socially. Here, School To Go would like to be a helping hand.
What is school refusal?
School refusal occurs when a child experiences involuntary absence from school, often due to mental challenges such as anxiety, stress, or social problems.
Children with school refusal may experience strong resistance to going to school and experience physical discomfort such as stomachaches and headaches. The symptoms can be a daily struggle for the child, especially if they also have diagnoses such as ADHD and autism. Getting the child back to a normal school routine requires special efforts, treatment and support.
Help for
school refusal
School To Go offers help for school refusal through an alternative form of education based on audio, where children can receive education at home. This includes remedial education for school refusal, where the child still receives education even though they cannot be physically present at school. Here, children can learn in a calm environment without the stressors that often cause their absence, making it easier for them to focus on their learning.
With School To Go, we want to support each child based on their unique needs. Our platform is therefore built so that the form and content can be adapted to the individual, and so that you as a family can control the pace and level yourself.
All our teaching follows the school's core curriculum, so children with school refusal can receive instruction directly online and avoid falling behind in their education.
Structured, safe and calm learning environment
School To Go offers a safe solution for children with school refusal, especially when combined with autism, ADHD or anxiety. This often requires a special approach as the children need extra support in their learning environment.
Our lessons all have a recognizable structure that is easy to understand and get into. Since all our lessons are recorded on audio, the child can sit in their own zone and listen, after which the adult can work on the topic with the child. This learning environment helps children who may have difficulty maintaining concentration, or who need to sit in their own world without too much social stimulation.
Parents of children with school refusal can find support through School To Go, as it provides you with a flexible learning method. At the same time, the child gains a sense of normality, as the learning platform helps them maintain their education in a safe and structured way.
Rules and legislation for school refusal
In Denmark, schooling is compulsory, and all children have the right and obligation to receive education from grades 0-9. However, for children with school refusal, ADHD or autism, remedial education may be necessary for a period of time.
Both the school and the municipality have a responsibility to intervene and offer help when a child experiences school refusal. This can be through individual education plans, special education or home schooling. Home schooling should, as far as possible, be provided by one or more of the child's own teachers, but it can also be provided by others than the child's teachers.
Help and subsidies for school refusal
What to do when faced with school refusal? First of all, it is important to identify the symptoms of school refusal and seek help early. It is important to get support from specialists who can develop a plan for how to best support the child.
Parents of children with school refusal can seek help with school refusal through Pædagogisk Psykologisk Rådgivning (PPR). There is also help with school refusal in the form of psychological help, special education and remedial education if the child has special needs.
