Homeschooling in German

Our German lessons develop children's abilities to communicate in German, both orally and in writing.

Subject purpose and curriculum

We have taken as our starting point the state's, and including the Ministry of Education's, objectives and guiding guidelines and learning objectives for basic educational content, so that we ensure that mandatory and important learning is the framework for the teaching and is appropriate for the age level. The curriculum has been updated to 2024 and is thus ensured of the latest knowledge and methods. We have also compiled the curriculum overview for you, so that you can keep up with what you should be able to do. We refer to the description of the subject's objectives and the full curriculum overview here:

German in everyday life

Through a combination of grammar, vocabulary, cultural understanding and practical exercises, children learn to use German in everyday life and prepare them for interaction with German-speaking communities. In addition, children will gain insight into the culture and society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland to promote their international understanding.

German step by step

Our German homeschooling program builds children's skills step by step through practical and relevant topics such as:

  • Personal Introductions and Everyday Speech: Children learn to introduce themselves, describe their pets, favorite things, and hobbies. They work on communicating about their family, friends, and leisure activities.

  • Cultural understanding and traditions: Children are introduced to German holidays, traditions and cultural differences. They learn about Berlin's sights and history as well as the geography and capitals of German-speaking countries.

  • Grammar and language use: Focus on basic grammar such as case (nominative, accusative, dative), gender and articles, and tenses (present, past, perfect). Children also work with adjectives and verb conjugations.

  • Numbers, colors and everyday language: Children learn to count in German, work with colors and describe everyday objects and clothing. They will also work with linguistic idioms and mathematical operations.

  • Food and Drink: Children learn German names for common foods and drinks, how to order food in a restaurant, and gain insight into German food traditions and typical dishes.

  • Body and health: Children gain knowledge about the parts of the body, learn to talk about health and illnesses, and describe emotions and states such as joy and fatigue.

  • Leisure and online life: Through topics such as pets, leisure activities and online life, students learn to use German in different social contexts and to talk about their digital activities and safety on the internet.

  • School life and room: Children learn vocabulary related to school subjects, school days and school-related topics, as well as how to describe their room and daily routines.
